Christmas gifts for beer lovers, from Manchester's bottle shops

Swerve the supermarket gift pack. Manchester's independent bottle shops for rare bottles, local cans, growler fills and gift vouchers, picked by people who've actually tried them.

3 November 2026 · 2 min read

A gift pack from the big supermarket says one thing: I was in the big supermarket. A bottle from a proper independent shop, picked by someone who's tried it, says you actually thought about it. Manchester's good for this, with fridges you can lose half an hour in and staff who'll happily help you choose.

Most of these will pour you one while you have a look round, which is the only way to do Christmas shopping.

For the one who's tried everything

Cafe Beermoth on Brown Street has had the whole Beermoth shop range in since January 2026, so there are hundreds of bottles and cans to take home, just off Market Street. Round the back of Piccadilly, Balance sells bottles of its own barrel-aged wild ales and blends, which keep, and look the part under the tree. Pigeon Beer Wanderer next door has a shelf of European bottles, lambic and aged wild ales among them.

Local shops worth the trip

The Epicurean on Burton Road has been at it since 2014 and tries every beer before it goes on the shelf. There's a good run of vegan, gluten-free and alcohol-free if someone on your list is off something, and it sells online and does gift vouchers. Heaton Hops in Heaton Chapel and Keg, Cask & Bottle in Prestwich, with three hundred-odd cans and bottles and growler fills, are what their neighbourhoods are known for.

A bit further out, Prairie Schooner in Urmston has over two hundred cans and bottles in the fridges, from local stuff to Cantillon and Augustiner, and Bunbury's in Bolton has a big German and Belgian range alongside the British.

When you've no idea what they like

Get them a voucher and let them choose. Port Street Beer House, Northern Monk Refectory, Cloudwater and The Epicurean all sell them, and a voucher for a bar comes with a night out thrown in.
